“That went well,” Sora murmurs, clapping Keanu on the shoulder as they climb the porch steps, turning their back on the retreating crowd descending the hill.

Feng leans against the porch, toying with his knife, while the younger Deep children gather around his feet, sitting down on the ground, still looking in the direction of the sea, as though hopeful the Ocean Spirits will make an appearance again even after they all vanished back underwater. Aika remains where she is, staring after the people.

Glancing back at them, Keanu pauses briefly. They all look like they are waiting for something.

The inevitable.

“We can all feel it,” Sora says, following his gaze.

The sea, stirring restlessly.

Keanu doesn’t respond and steps back into the restaurant—only to stiffen and for his skin to crawl the instant he finds his mother shooting him a wary look.

He narrows his eyes when he sees them:

The Twins. They’ve returned, their tattered clothes dripping water all over the floor. Akamai rests his weight against the wooden counter dividing the kitchen from the dining area, a few unruly strands escaping his tight bun, while his brother, Haku, is slouched on a chair and has one of his booted feet propped up against another chair, his hands linked and resting on his flat stomach.

It’s all a show, however. Haku is simply playing a role, one he desperately clings to as he’s beginning to unravel, his uniform suddenly too big on him and his hair falling limply over his shoulders.

He is still hurt. Keanu can easily tell by the way he’s leaning into the chair too heavily, as well as the way his leg resting on the other chair is shaking. Just a little, yet it doesn’t escape Keanu’s attention.

This is a broken man about to break into even smaller pieces.

Still, Haku’s lips twist into a smirk. “Well then,” he drawls, his dark eyes locking onto Keanu’s, “aren’t you going to ask me how I’m doing?”

Keanu senses Sora coming to a halt just behind him, his shadow joining his on the floor—but Keanu doesn’t take his gaze off Haku, studying him without a single word.

He won’t ever feel an ounce of concern for the bastard.

“What are you doing here?” Sora asks sharply, stepping forward until he’s at Keanu’s side.

Haku lifts his head, his eyebrows raised dramatically, his smirk widening. “Now, now,” he croons, “is this the way to speak to my brother and I, after what we’ve done for you today? We have risked our very lives, you know.”

Sora snorts.

“A little bit more respect,” Haku begins, his voice suddenly lowering and his eyes narrowing, anger slithering through his tone, “would be welcome—”

“We’re here to give you a heads-up,” Akamai cuts him off.

Haku stiffens and twists around to his brother, anger and challenge replaced by surprise and annoyance, and Keanu can’t help but blink—can’t help but be taken aback by the fact that Akamai is ruining his brother’s play.

“A heads-up?” Keanu repeats, recovering, suspicion tightening the muscles in his neck and shoulders. “What for?”

“The Princess is looking for you.
